The serving girl returned, depositing two tankards on the table and holding out one hand.

“Six gold pieces for the Venom, nine for the Liquid Sunset,” she said promptly.

Nolryn sighed, holding one hand up to stop his purple-haired companion from reaching into his pocket. The foreigner blinked back at him, hand frozen mid-task.

“New girl,” the prince explained patiently, then turned to the serving girl, still with one hand out. “Obviously you have yet to find your place here. Drinks at the ‘Thrai are already expensive, with good reason, but I’m hardly going to drag out more coin than is necessary. Two pieces for the Venom, four for the Liquid Sunset.”

The serving girl shook her head adamantly. “The prices have gone up since you were here last.”

Nolryn cocked an eyebrow at her. “The price of a Liquid Sunset has risen five gold pieces since our last round, not half an hour ago? Two for the Venom, four for the Liquid Sunset.” He nodded at his companion, who began fishing in his pocket for the respective coin.

“Highness,” the serving girl began, emphasising the form of address, “you have more than enough coin of your own to pay nine pieces of gold for a glass of your favourite drink.”

Alex raised one hand in protest. “I don’t. I’m a poor young boy from out of town, just trying to find his way in a strange new kingdom.”

The serving girl blinked twice. “You’re drinking with the prince,” she said flatly, “In the most expensive tavern in the kingdom.”

Alex smacked one outspread hand on the table, mouth and eyes wide with feigned innocence. “Really?”

Nolryn struggled to keep a straight face. “Yes,” he said solemnly, “I am prince of Raykin. Fear and revere me.” He turned back to the serving girl, grabbed her hand and placed four gold coins in it. “Four from me, two from him, and maybe another for your good self if you stay honest.”

The serving girl thought about this for a moment before accepting Alex’s two pieces of gold and leaving the table.

“Could it be true?” Alex asked the prince, his face still the picture of innocence.

Nolryn raised an eyebrow, then both men broke into fits of laughter.
