Nimay had been in much the same position all day, flaked out on the relative coolness of the floor, her limbs spread as widely as she could be bothered moving them. She’d been previously lying on the sofa with her hair dangling over the arm rest, one leg hooked over the back and the other dragging on the floor, but the leather had quickly become hot and sticky, so she’d abandoned that idea and moved to the floor.

The heatwave had lasted for so long now that every room in the palace was hot and stuffy. Even the room at the building’s heart, traditionally the coolest in the palace and the retreat for all who lived there, had been penetrated by the ceaseless heat, and now it was one of the stuffiest rooms.

She heard someone approaching from the doorway, footsteps slapping with heavy lethargy on the stones before one foot was planted either side of her head. She raised her eyebrows in question, knowing the visitor was planning on saying something.

Instead, a near bucket-full of water was doused over her face and body.

The swordswoman smiled gratefully and half-moved her hands into the traditional gesture of thanks. It wasn’t particularly cool water, but it was about the most relieved she’d felt in at least two weeks.

“Welcome,” Nol told her, then promptly doused himself with the remaining water in the bucket and flaked out on the couch. It wasn’t long before Nimay heard him shuffling to the floor. A gentle breeze, hardly refreshing, gusted through the room.

“Gah! Wind! Get it away from me! I hate heatwaves,” Nolryn pronounced tiredly, “I’m so bored I’m almost tempted to do something.”

Nimay couldn’t be bothered doing anything more than raise amused eyebrows in reply.

More footsteps sounded at the doorway. “So do something?”

The swordswoman gave a half-snort. “Doing stuff’s overrated,” Nol answered, “Why’re you in here, anyway? You’re not actually considering doing things are you?”

“Aeia no,” Melraan scorned, “I’m not that stupid. It’s just quicker to come here for water than the river.”

“River water’s colder though.”

“Yeah, but it makes you hotter going to get it. Plus I can have an excuse for having a break halfway through.”

“Fair enough.”

“I saw ants on the way over, too.”

Nimay opened her eyes and propped herself up on her elbows, looking at the swordsman as though he was a block of Kazinian ice.

“Did they look genuine or hopeful?” Nol wanted to know.

“Couldn’t say. I think they were genuine though.”

Nimay rested back down on the floor, grinning with the near-promise of rain.

“About Aeia-damned time,” Nol muttered.

“Tell me about it,” the swordsman replied. “I suppose I should move or something.”

“Moving’s overrated too,” Nol advised him. “Dying, now there’s a way to spend a heatwave.”
