“Right Kiddo, time to make a move.” Naraan hoisted his protégée onto the camel’s back, holding him firmly as he tapped the animal’s sides to make it stand up.
“Why do we have to go?” the young prince whined, “I don’t want to go to Kazin.”
Naraan shrugged before jumping up into his own saddle. “It’s not as bad as the other guys all make it out to be. It’s at least warm in Assiraz.”
Nolryn pouted. Evidently the archer’s attempt at redeeming the northern kingdom’s reputation had failed, probably because he had never been particularly keen on the place himself. Raykinian Winter nights were quite cold enough for him. Kazin was that cold in the daytime.
“But why do we have to go?” the prince persisted.
“Majesty told you already, didn’t he? Royal meet-and-greet, basically, so you’ll be able to meet up with all the other princes and princesses.”
“Why?”
Naraan paused briefly. “Majesty would like for you to know who you’ll be dealing with when you take your place on Raykin’s throne.”
“Why?”
Another pause as the Own’s archer mused over how to get out of this certain death trap. He tapped his heels against his horse’s flanks to urge her out of the stables, smirking faintly. “Ask Majesty.”
“Why?”
“Because he’s the one who organised this… mission,” he finished, for want of a better word.
“Why?”
“Ask Majesty.”
“Why?”
“Because he’s the one who organised this mission.”
A third pause, this time from the other end of the conversation. “You’re no fun,” the prince accused.
Naraan’s smirk broadened. “Why?”
