Nolryn climbed up on the fence of the nira pen, watching with fascination as the animals snuffled around in their enclosure.

“They’re what your army shirt’s made from, aren’t they?” He looked back up at Naraan, who was leaning with arms crossed on the wooden railing.

The archer nodded. “That’s right. Their skin’s so tough that not even the sharpest arrow can give it more than a scratch.”

“So how do they kill them?” the young prince asked, peering back down at the armoured creatures.

“Well, the skin around their necks isn’t very tough at all, so the nira farmers can cut that easily enough, as long as they don’t get their fingers in the way of the nira’s teeth.”

Nolryn nodded and climbed higher so he could sit on the edge of the fence instead of dangle underneath it. He frowned and pointed at two niras in the back of the pen. “Are they playing leapfrog?” he asked innocently, “They’re not very good at it.”

Naraan coughed. “No, Highness, they’re… ah…”

“Tell it like it is,” the nira farmer interrupted. “They’re humpin’, boy.”

The prince blinked, not sure whether he should be more worried that the niras were “humping” or that the nira farmer had called him “boy” instead of Highness. Finally he settled for the former. “What’s humping?” he asked his mentor.

“Makin’ babies,” the nira farmer interrupted again, “Havin’ sex and makin’ little baby niras.”

“Naraan?”

The archer had slapped his palm against his forehead and now glared daggers through his fingers at the chortling farmer. “He’s eight years old,” he said flatly, his words muffled by his hand.

The farmer shrugged. “He’ll have to learn it some time. No time like the present, eh Highness?” He winked candidly, only confusing the prince further.

“Learn what, Naraan?” he asked, realising he was most definitely missing something here.

Naraan glared once more at the old nira farmer, then took the prince’s arm and coaxed him from the wooden fencing. “No doubt you’ll learn about it when you’re more ready to,” he said ambiguously, leading Nol forcibly away.

“I’m ready,” Nol insisted, “Learn about what?”

The archer shook his head and smiled grimly. “If you learn about it now you’ll only think it’s disgusting.”

Nolryn was silent for a while before coming to a final conclusion. “You’re mean,” he said seriously.
