~ ~ ~
Another sparkling ball of blue light flickered on its erratic path over the quiet waters of the Ra-Lin, fading to a tiny pinprick before disappearing entirely on the opposite bank.
The warrior sighed heavily, playing idly with another ball of blue light. It reflected in the cool silver of her bangle, giving it a distinctly turquoise sheen that made the swirling patterns engraved into the metal seem almost black.
Of everything she ever thought of while she was out here in the night, the origins of the yrae stone at Nimay’s wrist baffled her most of all. She knew that once she had been ‘normal’. She knew she had not always been alone. She’d had a family once, but that had all disappeared. She was quite certain that her normal life, along with her memories of it, had been taken away the same day she had gained possession of the yrae stone.
Nimay frowned and tossed the ball of light into the river. The yrae stone wasn’t the cause of her prolonged amnesia; she knew she couldn’t blame it. That was what troubled her most. She simply had nobody to blame. She didn’t even know what exactly she should blame them for, either, or even if there was someone to blame.
Another ball of light formed in the palm of her hand. She stared hard at it, as though begging for it to answer her unanswerable questions, but it did nothing but sit in her hand, glowing happily.
An irrational anger built up inside her as her eyes bore into the light, and she threw it forcefully into the river, still glaring as it sank, wavering beneath the rippling water. A startled river fish darted away from it, silver scales shimmering blue as it made its escape.
The furrow in Nimay’s brow dissipated as the light faded, and instead she gave another helpless sigh before spreading her wings and drifting back to the palace.
