Nol passed his arrows back into the quiver on his back, cantering away from the cliff target and signalling to Murali that he could start his run. He frowned, noticing two camels approaching from the city.
“We’re thinking they’re messengers,” Garuk informed him.
“Two?”
“That’s what I said,” Gylepi agreed, leaning forwards in his saddle and squinting through the heat haze. “Ooh, hello, I think they’ve got blue shirts. I’ll let you deal with these ones, boys.” He grinned deviously and dug his heels into his horse’s flanks, galloping to the top of his run.
The two camel-riding archers reined their steeds in, grinning broadly.
“No,” Garuk said flatly, “Go home.”
The archers exchanged glances, shoulders slouched. “You don’t even know what we’re asking yet!” the older of the two said indignantly.
“What more could you be asking?” Garuk pointedly scanned their surroundings.
Murali frowned, leaning forward and resting crossed forearms on his horse’s neck. “I know you two from somewhere…”
“We’re First Company,” the younger of the two piped up eagerly, sounding more as though he was making excuses as to why they should be allowed to train here rather than actually answer Murali’s question.
“So are ninety-eight others,” Murali said dismissively.
Nol thumped a fist on his saddle. “They’re the ones who were bugging us at the archery range last week.”
“And the ‘Thrai the week before,” Garuk added.
Nol’s eyebrows arched in surprise. “That was them too? Persistent little bastards, aren’t they?”
Clattering hooves heralded Gylepi’s approach. “Garuk, you’re up. Why’re they still here?”
“Persistent little bastards,” Nolryn reiterated. “Look familiar?”
Gylepi frowned, then groaned and dropped his head in realisation. “The upstarts from the ‘Thrai,” he muttered, “Give it up, neither of you are Own material.”
“I beat you though!” the older of the two emphasised, making the three Own riders groan.
“At dagger toss,” Gylepi said with strained patience, “when I was drunk. You could probably beat Nol with a sword when he’s sober too, or Yoryl with… anything but daggers, really, but it doesn’t make you Own material.”
“You haven’t even given us a chance,” the archer complained, obviously doing his best to sound hurt.
Nol sighed heavily and ran his fingers through his hair. “Okay fine,” he said, sweeping his hand towards the start of the run. “Where the sun is now, you should get at least twenty arrows fired, every one of them hitting the middle three rings, at least half of them in middle red.”
The pair of archers stared wide-eyed at the target, from which Garuk was now pulling his arrows. “You’re joking.”
The prince shrugged. “Those are our standards. You can’t match them, you owe us each a Liquid Sunset.” Murali and Gylepi both nodded sagely, but Nol could see the amused glint in their eyes.
The two archers exchanged worried glances, then nodded determinedly and kicked their camels into motion.
“What’s happening?” Garuk asked, rejoining the conversation.
Gylepi grinned broadly. “His Highness is getting us some free beer.”
