Nimay sat with one leg up on the edge of the bench, fingers laced over her kneecap and chin resting heavily on them. She watched the impressive displays of swordsmanship going on in front of her with dull indifference.
“That guy over there looks pretty good,” Melraan observed, but there was no enthusiasm in his voice.
Nimay caught a few nods from the corner of her eye, and even the odd “hmm,” obviously feigning interest before falling back into a brooding silence.
“It’s too soon,” Ulkar said finally, thick arms folded over his chest. “We only just got back last week.”
“This is worse than doing it the normal way,” Rumal agreed.
“Life goes on, I guess,” Kurae mumbled.
More silence, save for the clash of the ninety-three swords of First Company. Several of the fighters turned to look hopefully at the row of six swordies of the Own sitting on the bench, silently begging with their eyes for them to be picked.
Rumal sighed resolutely and slapped his thighs. “Let’s just get this over with. Pick the sixteen of them we think could go all the way and leave the rest to them.”
Nimay nodded and dropped her leg reluctantly from the edge of the bench and watched the competing swordsmen more objectively.
“How about the guy over in the corner there? I’m sure I recognise him. He’s challenged us before.”
Nimay looked over to where Rumal was pointing, to a tall man of about thirty with his hair tied loosely at the nape of his neck.
Ulkar shook his head. “He was in my training class. Egotistic bastard.”
“Is he good though?”
The country boy nodded reluctantly. “Got a perfect score for his finals.”
“One down, fifteen to go.”
Nimay groaned and rubbed her eyes with the heels of her hands. It was going to be a long day.
