“Archers of the King’s Own.”
Even though his General’s booming voice had come from the archery range next door, Naraan couldn’t help cringing. Unfortunately, this ended up setting his arrow off at an odd angle and into one of the target’s inner rings—but not middle red. Rau only ever used that voice on two occasions, and as far as Naraan could remember, the archers hadn’t done anything wrong. Lately.
His class of seventeen-year-olds were smirking and giggling behind their hands at the sight of their archery master missing his mark. Naraan sighed, knowing he’d lost them for the rest of their time training under him.
“You’re timing’s impeccable, Rau,” Naraan yelled good-naturedly to the General, but his insides had already started twisting in anticipation.
“Meet in the courtyard,” Rau’s voice came again. Whether or not he had heard Naraan’s comment, the archer couldn’t know.
“That’ll be the day over with then, boys,” he told his students, slinging his bow over his shoulder. “You can all go home if you like; this is likely to last at least for the rest of your lesson, if not until sundown.”
“What is it, Sir?” one of the boys asked, before being smacked smartly on the back of the head.
“New challenger, you idiot!” one of the other boys answered for him. “Do you know who it is, Sir?”
“I have a fair idea,” the archery master answered obliquely. ‘Never expected the challenge to come so soon, though,’ he added to himself, then left the trainees’ archery range to a chorus of “Who is it?” from his class.
The other three archers of the Own were waiting for him, all wearing the same mask of cool, calm control with their quivers and bows slung over their shoulder.
“So is he good?” Gylepi demanded of the archery master.
Naraan nodded and begun walking towards the courtyard. “One of us is gone.”
