The sun was slowly setting as Gylepi perused the market, its extensive mess of streets glowing golden and making everything seem that much more beautiful. His fingers trailed over the smooth silk of a beautiful pale green robe, beaded with the outline of a Kazinian butterfly. He played idly with one of the glittering beads, then sighed and pushed the robe away.
Lania wasn’t old enough to appreciate elegant dresses yet, no matter what the shop owners told her, but she’d told him herself that seven years old was most definitely too old to be receiving stuffed animals as birthday presents.
Gylepi frowned momentarily at this, shoving his hands in his pockets as he wandered through the maze of shops, half paying attention to the goods they were selling. When a nearly-seven-year-old girl tells her father she doesn’t want a particular present, does that actually mean she doesn’t want it? How early did girls gain the knowledge of reverse psychology?
It was so much easier buying birthday presents for Ruyn—he was exactly like Gylepi had been as a boy. He loved toys with moving parts, and the older he got, the more he wanted to experiment with making his own. Bits of specially carved wood made the boy’s eyes sparkle, and he could be heard knocking nails into them and crafting his own creations.
The archer sighed and scratched his head thoughtfully. If Lania didn’t like her cuddly stuffed animals anymore, what did that leave? She’d never been interested in painting or drawing, much to her mother’s displeasure.
Something twinkled from the corner of Gylepi’s eye, making him turn his head to see what had caught his attention. It was a dagger blade, the shining steel blade golden in the dying remnants of the sun. The archer’s shoulders slouched; he’d hoped it had been a sign, but a dagger was hardly the thing for his daughter’s seventh birthday.
On the other hand…
He’d found Lania playing with his sword earlier that year, the day after she’d met Nimay for the first time. While he’d berated her then for playing with such a dangerous weapon, it gave him an idea. A steel sword would certainly be too much for her just now, but maybe a wooden one would fit her nicely.
Gylepi snapped his fingers and grinned, then began navigating the maze of shops to find a suitable carpenter.
