“I. Hate. Camels,” Nol muttered, kicking his steed violently with his heels to emphasise his words. Or were the words emphasising his kicks? Nimay couldn’t tell. “Stupid. Aeia-damned. Animals!”

“So get a horse,” the stable hand said with a grin.

“I plan to.”

Nimay giggled and swung her leg over her camel’s back, then tapped its flanks gently with her toes, as the riding master had directed. The camel snorted, then obediently began to stand up, lifting its hind legs and making Nimay drop the reins in her haste to grip the front of the saddle and keep from falling forwards.

She accidentally kicked viciously inwards with her legs to hold herself steady, making her steed grunt in confusion and plonk its rear back on the sandy soil of the stable. She patted the animal’s fluffy head apologetically, then tapped its flanks again.

The camel turned its head around to look at her indignantly, but made no moves to stand up.

The swordie-in-training pursed her lips and snorted, not unlike the camel. She stroked the camel’s neck encouragingly to calm it a bit more and tried standing it up a third time, tapping it slightly more firmly this time. Still the camel didn’t obey her.

She sighed again and swung her leg back over the camel’s back, walking around to the front of her steed. She grabbed its head firmly with both hands and stared hard into one of its plainly uninterested eyes.

’Look, you stupid bastard,’ she told it, well aware that it wouldn’t hear her words, but she hoped the meaning would at least get across. ’I may not be your normal master, but I am for the moment. I won’t kick you when you stand up this time, so just obey me and we’ll both be happy.’

The camel didn’t respond at all. It just sat there chewing its cud and generally ignoring her. ’Why in Lin’s name doesn’t desert magic give me any powers over camels?’ Nimay muttered to herself, then mounted the animal again.

She took a breath to release the frustration, then gripped the saddle hard and tapped the camel’s sides for a forth time.

Still nothing.

“Told you,” Nolryn said flatly, resting his crossed arms on the front of his saddle. His camel suddenly lurched into action, tossing the prince from the saddle to land uncomfortably on the sand beside a now-standing camel. “Why didn’t you do that when I told you to?”

Nimay giggled again, only to feel the same lurch from her own beast, but she was able to grab on in time, and didn’t kick the animal accidentally as it rocked to its feet. The swordie raised her arms in triumph. Now if only she could know how to make the thing stand up when she wanted it to…
