“KURAE!”
The swordsman jumped at the unnecessarily loud calling of his name. He hunched his cloak up over his shoulders and set the cayenne pepper he’d been looking at back on the stall. “What is it, Melraan?”
“We found cocoa!” the two swordies chimed together.
Kurae’s eyebrows raised despite himself. “How much?”
“About twenty tins this big,” Ulkar answered, holding his hands about half a foot apart.
Kurae rolled his eyes as Melraan whacked the shorter swordie upside the head. “He means how much coin. Five silvers,” he said, turning back to Kurae.
The swordsman-turned-chef frowned and scratched his jawbone thoughtfully. It was a good deal more expensive than any he’d seen in Assiraz, but they barely ever had the opportunity to go that far north, so five silvers was as good as anything. It also meant that cocoa was finally moving south. Maybe, just maybe, it would cross the border into Raykin some time soon.
Finally he nodded. “A tin for us and two for the healers. How does that sound?”
“Good to me.” Ulkar fished one of the silvers out of his pocket and pressed it into Kurae’s palm.
Melraan did the same. “It’s off this way,” he said, pointing with a movement of his head and motioning for Kurae to follow.
Kurae lamented not looking properly at the other foods on offer at the Sissillyan market, but he figured he would be able to peruse the fruits and spices after he’d bought the cocoa. He had to admit, he was looking forward to a warming cup of hot chocolate himself.
The two swordsmen led him through the muddy maze of the market, getting lost twice before finally finding the stall selling cocoa.
“You can rob the rest of the silver off the other guys tonight,” Melraan told him, then his two colleagues left him to it.
Kurae cracked his fingers, preparing to begin his bargaining. Five silvers for a single tin? Not if he had something to do with it.
