“It was a silly mistake, really,” Lynnlita chided herself, “Lynnlita dropped her glass, and it smashed on the floor. The glass cut her fingers when she bent to pick it up.”
Yamin raised her eyebrows just barely as she tied the bandage to Lynnlita’s cut finger. She doubted the Llayan’s story—for starters, she wasn’t the type of person who would bend to pick up a dropped glass. Rather, she would ring for a servant to do it for her. The cut itself had pretty much stopped bleeding by the time she’d made it to the healing house. Why Lynnlita insisted on having some medical excuse, however mundane, to be in the healing house, Yamin had no idea.
She wondered vaguely what the princess’s real reason for being here this time was, not doubting that a seemingly innocent question would be coming soon.
“Yamin?”
’Here we go.’ She looked up patiently.
“Why is it that neither Yamin nor her sister ever speaks a word?”
The healer shrugged honestly. She’d been expecting that question for a while, so it hardly took her by surprise.
“Did something traumatic happen in Yamin’s early life?” Lynnlita tried again, her voice achingly sincere. “Has she considered counselling?”
Yamin grinned softly and shook her head. Yan’s appearance had had nothing to do with the twins’ silence.
Lynnlita reached out and took Yamin’s hands in her own, looking up with such earnestness that Yamin had to bight her bottom lip to keep herself from laughing. “Lynnlita would highly recommend it,” the princess told her, “She has known of a servant who suffered a great trauma as a child, and did not speak a word for years. Now, after a year of counselling, his speech is improving to what it once was.”
Yamin blinked and nodded, pretending to be interested.
“Promise, Yamin,” the Llayan continued, gripping the healer’s hands tighter. “Promise Lynnlita that Yamin will seek out a counsellor.”
Yamin nodded again, biting her lip harder and silently urging the princess to leave.
“Lynnlita thanks her,” the Llayan whispered, bowing her head and letting go of Yamin’s hands, finally standing up from the bed block and walking out of the healing house.
“That was… odd,” Nanuka noted once she’d left.
Yamin blinked after the Llayan, then shrugged and went back to her work.
