“Yamin, what are you doing?” Nanuka stood at the door, one arm hugging her stomach, the other held up so she could nervously chew her fingernails.
Yamin leaned over the thrai victim, stroking her blotched hand gently as it lay on the bed. She looked sympathetically at the clouded, dead eyes of the woman. Not half an hour ago, she’d been a strong, healthy woman. Now she was so close to death that Yamin was truly scared.
She took a deep breath, set a look of steely determination on her colleague, and picked up the woman’s forearm, swollen to the size of a shiny red coconut.
“Are you sure you can do this?” Nanuka asked quietly. Yamin could see her friend’s fingers shaking.
Yamin nodded and focused hard on the snake bite in front of her. Cool blue magic began to seep out of the yrae stone around her wrist, dripping down her skin and onto the sore like water, but there was no effect on the woman.
She frowned and turned the dripping magic into a trickle and a steady stream. She could feel and hear her heart pumping in her ears, forcing the blood around her body with the same force as she pushed the magic from the yrae stone.
A wave of black washed over her vision, but her frown only deepened as she consciously told her lungs to take in another breath. She wouldn’t give up now. She could actually see the poison leaking from the woman’s body now, a pair of tiny droplets of glistening liquid forming on the twin bite marks from the thrai.
She breathed in again as more black flowers threatened to wipe her vision. She could hear nothing beyond the rushing wind of the blood in her ears. She wavered slightly on her feet, releasing one hand from the woman’s arm and gripping tightly onto the edge of the bed to keep herself from falling over. She could just barely feel a pair of hands grab her waist, but didn’t acknowledge the other healer’s presence.
Every muscle in her body was telling her to stop, stop now, but she couldn’t now, not when she was this close.
She took another breath, more shallow this time, then shook her head and blinked just briefly to shake away the black flowers that edged in from the sides of her vision, but when she opened her eyes again, she could see nothing. She shook her head again, but still her vision was clouded with black. She growled in resolve, pouring more magic into the woman’s system to flush out the remaining poison.
Finally, apparently aware that she wasn’t listening to it, Yamin’s body shut down completely, and she knew no more.
