“Hey Kaen!”
The blade archer set his tankard back on the table and turned with eyebrows raised in question.
War, the latest of Nol’s purple-haired foreigners being dragged to the ‘Thrai, was resting with one arm up on the bar bench and a group of snickering archers and the odd swordie behind him. This could only be bad.
“You suck!”
The half a dozen guys and a girl behind him started snorting behind their hands and whispering to each other.
Kaen shot a few metaphorical daggers at the Force and his lackeys, silently reminding them that it wouldn’t take too much more of that to turn them into physical daggers, and turned back to his beer…
“Hey Kaen!”
Kaen clenched his eyes shut and let out what could have been perceived as a long-suffering sigh had he not met the Force only five minutes ago.
“What?” he demanded, snapping around in his chair.
“You still suck!”
Kaen made a noise halfway between his previous sigh and a threatening growl. A smart man would have backed off by now.
Nol leant in behind the purple-haired man to whisper what looked to Kaen like a warning. The blade archer nodded in silent agreement. At least one archer knew when to stop.
War cocked an eyebrow and glanced down at the prince. “Fuck off, I’m a Force,” he drawled, then turned back to his target for the evening.
Kaen narrowed his eyes, then slowly and very deliberately turned his back on the group of bow-archers-and-friends.
“Hey Kaen!”
The blade archer winced again and growled into his beer, but deigned not to turn around this time. Maybe if he ignored it, it would go away…
“Hey Kaen, you rude bastard, I’m talking to you! Hey Kaen!”
“And I’m ignoring you,” Kaen called over his shoulder.
“Hey Kaen!” That Aeia-damned voice was closer now. Aeia-damned bastard bloody… “I challenge you to a duel.”
He was well aware of the pair of Kazinian-pale hands braced on the edge of the table, but was determined to casually finish his swig of beer and rest the glass safely back on the table before doing anything about them. Only then did he whip three daggers from his belt, one of which flew into the Middle Red of a target on the other side of the room, the other two planted firmly into the table where War’s hands had been.
Had been.
He’d missed.
Aeia-damned bloody crap bastard buggery…
“Not bad,” War conceded, his eyes on the dagger in Middle Red, pointedly ignoring the two in the table that would have, on any other person except maybe a few of the guys in the Own, chopped two fingers off. “Except that’s our target over there,” the Force continued, pointing to where Yoryl was taking aim and sighing dramatically. “Too bad, quael, you’re already one behind.”
Kaen shoved his chair back as he stood up, drained his beer glass, yanked his daggers from the table and strode purposefully towards the targets.
