Nol drummed his fingernails against his crown.
“Close enough,” he declared finally, “Happy birthday to me!”
“Sit down, Nol,” Melraan laughed, yanking the prince’s sleeve, “You know damn well it’s not high moon yet. Didn’t we warn you the last hour was going to be the longest?”
“Yes, but this is just getting ridiculous now. How far through the Aeia-damned last hour am I?”
Melraan craned around in his chair to look up at the moon, then turned around with a shrug, taking a sip from his beer glass. “About a quarter.”
Nol blinked slowly, fixing a deadpan stare on the swordsman. “Sweep the desert.”
Nimay was almost sympathetic. She still knew she would be just as impatient on the night before her twentieth birthday. She reached over and nicked the crown perched on top of his head, slapping it on her own with a grin.
The prince merely turned his deadpan look on her and half-raised an eyebrow. “See what I mean?”
Nimay frowned as she tried to find a comfortable position for the crown to sit. True to the prince’s word, she failed miserably. She shrugged and posed in it anyway, doing her best to look royal.
Unfortunately, her only exposure to royal women had been Princess Lynnlita.
Melraan and Nolryn both burst out laughing, and the prince quickly snatched his crown back. “That’s appalling, ‘may,” he grinned, then tossed the circle of gold over to Melraan, who abruptly stopped laughing and put on a look of shock, glancing down the table to where Mithé was sitting.
“Oh come on, Melraan, what’s he going to do, adopt you as his son?”
The swordie shrugged and placed the crown with exaggerated care over his hair. “Is it supposed to be that tight? It doesn’t fee low enough… or something…”
“Well, you’ve got it upside down for a start,” Nol informed him, trying desperately not to laugh. It had been strange enough seeing the swordsman tonight with his hair brushed, let alone with the headpiece of the crown prince sitting atop it.
“Aeia-damn it, how do you put up with this thing?” He handed it back to its owner.
“I don’t,” Nol said flatly, spinning the gold circlet idly on his index finger. “Never really worn it before tonight.” His face brightened suddenly, and he looked at Melraan. “Let’s play hoopla with it!”
Nimay snickered behind her hand.
“Probably not the best idea, Nol,” Melraan noted.
“My crown, I can do what I like with it.”
Melraan shook his head, then pointed at the window behind him. Nimay followed his finger to where the moon hung in the sky, then grinned and looked down the table to see Mithé standing up to give his ‘welcome to adulthood’ speech.”
“I thought you said we were only fifteen minutes through,” Nol accused the swordie, but he couldn’t keep the excited grin from his face as he combed his hair back with his fingers and repositioned his crown.
Melraan shrugged. “Close enough.”
