The lithe predator wandered on silent paws into the bedroom, then paused and looked back over her shoulder at the door, tail swishing slightly in indecision. One ear flicked, and she sat down on her haunches to begin licking her paw.
Something flickered in the corner of her eye and she froze, tongue still halfway through a vitally important lick. Carefully she resumed her grooming, keeping her eyes focussed closely on the movement. It was moving more slowly now, slinking out of sight. If she didn’t go for it now, it might disappear entirely, then she’d have nothing.
She dropped down further to the carpet, pressing herself into it as hard as she could to hide from her prey. Her eyes opened wide in excitement, now nothing more than black pupils with the finest rim of gold surrounding them. Her ears were turned forwards like great saucers, twitching to pick up the slightest sound that might alert her to her prey’s next move.
She began to slink forwards, her sinuous body moving like silken liquid over the shaggy carpet as she approached.
Her prey stopped moving.
She froze again and dropped back onto her belly, her tail swishing with excitement. This was the time. Her muscles tensed, her tail quivered just above the carpet, her hind quarters wriggled, and she leaped forwards, lunging for her quarry and digging her claws and teeth firmly into the wriggling, golden feathered snake.
Lynnlita burst into giggles as the leopard cub, not so much a cub anymore, rolled around on the floor, paws ant teeth tangled in the boa as she gave it firm bunny kicks with her hind legs.
“Dapple is such a sweetheart,” she laughed, “But she really must stop mutilating Lynnlita’s clothes.”
Dapple looked back up at her with wide eyes and big ears. There was most definitely a grin on her face, too, albeit hidden by pheasant feathers. She flung her head back, flicking her tongue to try and extricate the feathers from her mouth. She stood up, still flicking her tongue when the final feather wouldn’t come out. Oh, to have opposable digits…
“Finished?” the princess inquired, bending down to carefully pull her boa from under the leopard’s paw.
The cub instantly forgot about the feather in her mouth and clamped her jaws firmly around the boa. She looked back up at Lynnlita with a glint in her eye that plainly said, “Lynnlita gave this to Dapple. She’s not getting it back now!”
Lynnlita giggled again and wrapped the end she was holding around the leopard’s head and blind the poor creature in a mass of gold feathers. “Fine,” she said airily, “Lynnlita will wear her other gold boa.” She strutted across the room to her wardrobe and selected the other, not-quiet-so-dead boa from the hanger.
Dapple paused in her maiming to look at the string of feathers Lynnlita was wrapping around herself. Her tail thumped against the carpet. That feather-snake was still alive! She couldn’t let this rest…
