Nol stripped his armour off gladly, sighing with relief at the weight that had literally been lifted from his shoulders. He rolled them experimentally to work out the stiffness that the lance had caused in his muscles.

“Might want to hurry it along there, Nol.” Melraan plonked himself on a hay bale in front of him, nodding towards the door of the stables. “Her Dainty Highness wants to congratulate you.”

Nolryn paused and glanced over his shoulder at the door, then shrugged, trying to work out how the buckles worked on the plates of metal encasing his legs. “Don’t worry about it; I’ve been wanting to talk to her, anyway.”

The swordsman’s eyes widened and his eyebrows shot up. He looked as though he was about to fall off the hay bale. “Since when?”

Her Dainty Highness chose that moment to step into the stable, her older sister trailing behind. Their royal gowns contrasted sharply with the dirty building.

“Prince Nolryn shall surely win the tournament this year!” Lynnlita said brightly.

Melraan muttered behind his hand. “That would sounds o much more genuine if she had the faintest idea what she was talking about.”

Nol grinned, finally able to remove the armour plating from his left leg before he began working on his right.

“Pray tell, Prince Nolryn,” Amyrallyn began, glancing around for something to sit on that wouldn’t mutilate her dress the moment she touched it, “Why is it the joust that he participates in, when he’s widely known to be the best archer in his kingdom?”

“Ah yes, about that…” Nol straightened, giving up on the armour for the moment. “You might like to suggest to your parents to rethink their choice of prizes for those bits.”

Both princesses looked puzzled, forcing Nol to explain.

“Which kingdom is most well-known for its horses? Kazin. Who competes most in the archer? Kazin. They already have the best horses they could want, so why would they want a funny little Llayan thing? Incidentally, I’ve already got a Kazinian horse myself, so I’m really not vying for one of yours.”

“Likewise with the sword,” Melraan added, “Raykinian camels are undeniably better than the two-humped things you’ve got over here, so you’re not going to get all that many Raykinians competing, which is unfortunate considering we’re the best at it.”

“Melraan is competing,” Lynnlita interjected.

“He made me.”

“Anyway,” Nol interrupted, “point is, there are better things you could offer for prizes than horses and camels. Food, maybe, money always goes down well.”

“Or an elephant,” Melraan grinned.

“An elephant would definitely get me competing in the archery. See if you can work on that one. I’m sure you can stand to lose three elephants every three years.”

The princesses blinked and exchanged glances.

“Amyrallyn will speak with Father,” the older of the two suggested, “But she can’t promise anything. Llayad is very set in her traditions.”

“Understood.” Nol bent back down to his armour “Let me know for next year though!”
