Nimay couldn’t pick what it was exactly, but there was definitely something different about the General this morning as the riders of the King’s Own gathered in his office.

Rau stood beside the map as always, the rest of the guys were leaning back against the opposite wall as always, taking bets on where the next mission would be, same as ever, but there was definitely something inherently different about the General. She glanced around at the others, but apparently none of them had noticed the slight twinkle in his eye or the faint tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Once the men were assembled, he cleared his throat to gain some semblance of silence, then stepped in front of the map. “Okay boys, just a short one this time, no more than a week or two, depending on how we’re going.”

Nimay raised an eyebrow and folded her arms. A general look of confusion passed over the faces of the other guys. They couldn’t even reach the border in that time.

Rau’s cheeky look only grew as he pointed at the map, tracing his finger downstream of Ni-Yana.

This time the look of confusion was joined by general sounds of disbelief.

“What are you playing at, General?” Ulkar asked finally, “There’ve never been any problems downstream, not big enough for us to be needed, anyway.”

“True enough,” Rau admitted. His grin was completely undisguised now. “Majesty’s given us a week off.”

This statement was met with complete silence.

“A break,” Rau reiterated, “A holiday, a sojourn, a rest…”

“We get the idea, General,” Nol interrupted, “How long’s this idea been brewing for?”

The General shrugged. “No idea, but he just informed me of it this morning. Everything’s pretty much arranged already, and I’ve been told specifically that nobody can opt out of this. It’s supposed to be some sort of team building thing.”

“So… what exactly are we doing?” Kaen asked, arms folded as he rested back against the wall.

“Raw basics, we have a paddle-steamer boat for a week or two, depending on how we’re going, which we paddle downstream, then paddle back up again to Ni-Yana. The boat’s got pretty much everything there, except food, we have to bring that, but it’s got beds, cooking stuff including enough firewood for the first… four or five days, I think Majesty said.”

“So no horses then?” Garuk asked.

Rau shook his head. “Also, strictly no weapons. We’re not supposed to do any training on this thing—hey!” he shouted over the noise of disapproval, “you can bring anything else to entertain yourselves—books, cards, fishing rods, whatever—but no weapons. And you won’t need any coin, either. There are only tin-pot little towns on that stretch of river.”

“Oi, don’t mock the tin-pot towns.”

“Sorry Ulkar. Okay, so you’ve all got that? We leave tomorrow around dawn. Bring whatever you want as long as it’s not Own-related, no coin, as much booze as you want… but no weapons.”

“Oi, don’t mock the tin-pot towns.” <- *cackles* That's brilliant to put that in there.

*grins* Nice idea this. ^-^ *snickers at the idea of it all*
