Nimay sat down heavily on the edge of her bed, glaring out through her window at the distant horizon. Her arms were folded and she huffed quietly to herself, as though putting on a show for someone to prove that she was definitely Not Happy, but there was nobody there but herself.
She’d had a miserable day’s training, which had been topped off with an equally miserable evening.
Archery was terrible as usual, made worse by the fact that her only ally in the lesson had been confined to the healing house for the day, and probably would be for a few more days to come. Naraan, the archery master, had tried to help her with fending off the boys, who attacked her with words as sharp as any arrow they fired, now that the prince wasn’t here to help her. Somehow though, Naraan only made it worse.
The afternoon had been taken up by the palu. Goneb, the weapons master for the spear-like weapon, always looked out for his own, and paid little heed to the struggling, silent little girl. The boys took the opportunity to berate her further, and no matter how determined she was, she couldn’t beat them, nor could she ignore them.
Even the sword lesson in the evening, normally Nimay’s favourite part of the day, was less than she had hoped. She was strong enough now to evenly match the boys, but that only added fuel to their endless fire. They seemed to all be convinced she was using the yrae stone to beat them somehow, but there was no way she could tell them that she would never even dream of such a thing. The better she became, the more they ridiculed her for it.
The door to her room opened in the stairwell behind her, but she didn’t turn around. Instead, she hunched her shoulders further and frowned harder at the purple horizon. At least she had someone to complain to now.
“’may?” Nol’s stuffy voice floated up the stairs, and she could hear his footsteps creeping carefully into the room. “Naraan told me you had a bad day. Are you okay?”
Nimay shook her head stiffly, not taking her eyes from the window. She knew she shouldn’t, but she blamed Nol for her miserable day. If he’d been there, none of the other boys would have picked on her so much.
“Sorry I wasn’t there today,” Nol said softly, then followed it up with a loud sniffle, almost as though he was demonstrating why he had been absent.
Nimay huffed again, but he could feel her guard being let down. Anyone else would have left her in peace then, but not Nolryn.
He tiptoed up to her bed, then crawled over it to sit beside her and wriggled his arms around her in a clumsy but comforting hug. He let go quickly, but stayed seated beside her, silent but for the occasional sniffle.
Eyes still on the window, Nimay hugged him back.
