Nolryn was just finishing his breakfast as Lynnlita floated into the room. She held a black tube up to her eye, the other end pointed at the windows. She seemed completely absorbed in the contents of the tube, so much that she almost walked into the dining table.
“Watch out!” Nol warned her.
The young princess stopped abruptly, taking the black tube away from her eye and bracing her free hand against the table’s edge with a giggle.
“What is that thing?” Nol asked through his last mouthful of bread. Instantly he regretted asking—Lynnlita had that look in her eye that it was something a poor little Raykinian wouldn’t understand.
“It’s a kaleidoscope,” she answered primly, choosing a chair opposite Nolryn to await her own breakfast. She held the tube up to her eye again, turning it slowly in her hands.
“Okay,” Nol said with a shrug. He’d known the young Llayan long enough to know that he had a better chance of trying it out the less interest he showed in it. He picked up his mug with both hands and drained the remaining mouthful of water from it, not sparing the princess a glance.
“Here,” Lynnlita said finally, handing the black tube across the table to him. “Close one eye and hold it up to the light.”
Nol glanced disparagingly at the kaleidoscope, but took it anyway with forced reluctance and held it up to his eye.
Lynnlita giggled. “No, silly, the other way around.”
Nol shook his head and sighed, but turned the thing around the right way, looking through it at the window.
It looked like a small version of the stained glass window in the Great Hall, only it was constantly changing, and had a good deal more pink hearts in it than the Great Hall. He couldn’t help smiling at the changing colours and patterns at the end of the tube.
He lowered it again, inspecting the opposite end to try and figure out how the thing worked. He could see a number of little pieces of coloured glass, cut into the shapes he could see inside the tube, all held in with a clear piece of glass at the end. But this was just a jumble of colours and shapes; what he could see inside had a definite pattern.
“How does it work?” he asked, turning the tube over in his hands before holding it back up to the light again.
Lynnlita rested her elbows on the table and set her chin in her hands, a mischievous twinkle in her eye. “Magic.”
