Nimay pored along the lines of portraits, searching for that one she’d seen the other day. What was his name? King… Gali? Golen? Something with a G, anyway. It didn’t matter what his name was. She’d recognise him by the picture alone.
King Galeo, there he was, 3820 to 3841. She stabbed a finger at the portrait and looked back at Nol.
The prince had his arms folded as he stepped forwards to inspect the portrait. Finally he shook his head and shrugged. “What about him?”
Nimay sighed irritably at the typically unobservant male eyes. She used her fingernail to “draw” hair on Galeo’s head, bringing it down from its tight ponytail, then scratched out his beard and spread both hands to the prince. ‘Take his hair down and give him a shave, and he’s you!”
Nol shook his head again. “I don’t see it,” he said, cocking his head slightly as if that might improve his perception. “You really think he looks like me?”
The General nodded, still puzzled as to how he couldn’t see it.
He bent forwards to inspect the painting further. “I guess he looks kind of like me, but he is my great great something grand father, so you’d expect there to be some resemblance.” His eyes wandered to some of the other paintings hanging on the throne room’s walls, then made an indelicate noise at one of them. “Except him. I should hope I don’t look anything like him.”
Nimay giggled and shook her head. It was hard to see how that man fitted into the family line at all.
“Ooh, actually…” Nol tapped at the name on the brass plaque under the portrait, which of course meant nothing to Nimay. “That’s her second husband. The first one was the first prince to be part of the Own, and he died in Kazin before becoming king, but they had a kid first.” He trailed off and began searching through the paintings, reading the names and dates as he went.
“There, that’s him. Much more like it.”
Nimay continued to walk down the line of former monarchs as Nolryn told her the finer points of their lives, before finally reaching a portrait that Nimay at least recognised half of.
Queen Alurié, 4025 – 4030
King Mithé, 4030 –
It was a much younger, slimmer Mithé, with a full crop of black hair, but he was easily recognisable nonetheless. He still had some toning left on his arms from his days in the army, a few years before the painting was done. The diminutive woman seated on the throne beside him reminded Nimay more of Empress Shizaaqa than of Nolryn. She had that same glint in her eye that commanded obedience.
“Majesty said they had three portraits before Mama was happy with it. He was thoroughly sick of being painted by the end of it.” Nol’s tone didn’t change from the one he’d used to describe the other monarchs. Apparently, even his own mother was ancient history now.
