The Ra-Lin glittered in the late afternoon sun as the Own emerged from the gorge of the Ra-Lin. Nimay closed her eyes and smiled into the sun. Aside from the survival training as part of army training, she’d never been outside of Ni-Yana. Now, she was on her way to one of the longest journeys a Raykinian was likely to make.
“Nol, ‘may, need to tell you a few ground rules.”
Nimay glanced over at the prince, then shrugged and walked Ashburn over to the General.
“You’ve both brought cooking stuff, right?”
Both new recruits nodded. “I had to persuade the kitchen to part with a few pots,” Nol added.
Rau grinned. “You might like to buy some yourself when we get back. You’ll need them for every mission.”
“I can’t cook though.”
The General laughed. “None of us can, really. Except Kurae, his are the meals to look out for. Nol, he’ll probably get you and the other three blue shirts to go shoot down some pheasants or something. Emon’s not too bad either. The rest of us are pretty hopeless though. We’ve got a roster worked out, so you’ll basically just take the place of your predecessors.”
“Hang on,” the prince interrupted, “Why don’t we just leave it to Kurae and Emon, if the rest of you aren’t really any good?”
“Because that wouldn’t be fair on those two. Anyway, you’re after Kurae, and ‘may, you’re after Kaen. Breakfast is generally just a damper or something simple like that, boiled eggs, whatever. Depending on the season, either lunch or dinner is the main one, that’s up to you.”
“Can I still go with boiled eggs for that one?”
Nimay hid a grin behind her hand. He’d already suggested such a thing to her before they left.
“If you must,” Rau muttered, “Just bear in mind Garyn rostered for the meal after you, so if you screw up he’ll screw up right back at you.” He grimaced and slapped both rookies on the back. “If you don’t rue blade archers already, you will by the time we reach Ni-Aneka.”
