Notes Genesis 062. Oh yeah, they shoulda run. Shoulda, woulda, didna.

‘We should be running,’ the rational part of Nimay’s mind told her, ‘Why aren’t we running? We should be running.’

She didn’t dare to glance at the General to try and read his mind though. In truth, she rued every time she had to blink.

Twenty Kazinian warriors were thundering towards them, half with swords raised and ready, half with arrows firing. Ordinarily, twenty riders would pose little threat, but every one of these Kazinians was astride a black horse, the mark of the best fighters in Sissillya. For all intents and purposes, they were the Sissillyan Own, only there were twenty of them, and only fifteen from Raykin.

‘Why aren’t we running?’ Nimay asked herself again, each word being punctuated by another arrow crashing into her blade. She couldn’t afford to let a single arrow fly past her—any that “missed” her were clearly aimed at the archers behind her, and she knew they would be fatal if her sword didn’t intersect their flight first. The yrae stone wouldn’t work here. It was easier to deflect an arrow with her blade than to grab it mid-flight with the stone and throw it out of the way.

“Blue shirts!” Rau shouted suddenly, his voice rising over the arrows clashing into blades, “Archer, rear left!”

Four arrows instantly shot out from behind, one whistling past Nimay’s ear. Two of the arrows clanged into the front line of Kazinian swordsmen who were defending the archers behind. The target archer managed to avoid the third, but the fourth drilled itself deep into his neck and he fell from his horse.

“Rear right!” Rau yelled again.

The Kazinian fell in the same way as the first, bringing their number down to eighteen, but they would still only be able to take down one more before they attacked.

“Swordie, front left! Purple shirts: swordie, front right!”

Arrows and daggers flew, but only one of the two swordies fell. If the situation hadn’t been so tense, Nimay knew she would have heard the archers jeering the purple shirts behind her. As it was though, even they must have wished the knives had hit home.

Two swordsmen were already bearing down on her, one on either side, probably assuming she was the best in the group because of Ashburn. Never had she been so thankful to be riding alongside Rumal. He charged forwards at one of the attacking swordies as Nimay kicked Ashburn into motion and lunged for the second.

In the heat of battle, Nimay made no hesitation in using the yrae stone to defend herself. Her eyes were fixed on the enemy blade, and she grabbed a hold of it with her magic, holding it as tightly as possible to slow the Kazinian’s movements. She struck out with her sword, slicing easily through the Kazinian’s neck.

Before he had even fallen from his horse, another swordsman was on her, and she only just managed to get her sword up in time.

‘Why didn’t we run?’

They totally should have run.

But you write nice tense scenes.
