Narine always liked to look her best. Every morning, regardless as to how late she had slept in, she refused to leave the house for work without at least brushing her eyelids with a choice shade of eye shadow and smearing some red onto her lips. She’d lost count of how many breakfasts she had skipped in order to get to the palace at least close-ish to being on time, but never had she skipped her morning ritual of applying makeup.

This morning she had taken special care. Over the weekend, she had been to the market and found what she had been searching for since she had become a healer. It was a beautiful shade of eye shadow, exactly the same colour as the dark green around the hem of her healing robe. She’d had the paler shade for years, but when she had found this one, she’d squealed with joy and didn’t even bother to haggle with the vendor for the price.

Today, she proudly wore her new eye shadow with the old, pale green, perfectly coordinated with her robes. The girls would simply love this.

She’d chosen a relatively plain lipstick and simple gold chain necklace for the day, drawing more attention to the newest addition to her cosmetics collection.

She batted her eyelids at the two guards standing by the palace’s back entrance, but, being male and therefore uneducated in the subtleties of female adornment, they just smiled back and opened the door for her, same as every day.

There were precious few members of the palace staff on the crossing from back door to healing house, either, so she couldn’t show off her purchase to any of them either. No matter. That just meant the healers would be the first to see.

She swept into the white dome of the palace healing house, in such a way that was just a bit too casual. They’d have to notice.

Fali oohed as soon as she turned around from where she was cutting strips of cloth for bandages. Menala was beside her, rolling the strips up into more manageable bundles, and gave a similar sound of approval.

Narine couldn’t hold back her grin any longer. “I bought it the day before yesterday,” she informed them, batting her green-dusted eyelids.

“I like it,” Fali told her, nodding approvingly, “How much was it?”

Narine shrugged. “I forget, but it was definitely worth every copper.”

Yamin was there of course, and finished washing her hands at the sink to come over and see what the fuss was about. She raised her eyebrows, nodding slowly. As always, her face could be read like a book. ‘Interesting, but…’

Narine raised her eyebrows worriedly. “But…” she prompted.

The head healer lifted one finger and tapped her forehead with it, or more specifically, the green thumbprint that marked it.

Narine cringed and slapped her palm against her own forehead, which was curiously lacking in healing dot. “Sorry, Madame Yamin, I forgot completely.”
